How is your family history showing up in your present? This talk will cover the topic of family systems - the surprising ways that our ancestors continue to influence us now. There are so many things that our families pass down to us, and most of the time we don't even realise. But when we ask the right questions, we can unlock new insights that might even help us right now. Questions like: what were the rules in your family? What was valued? What was taboo? Who were the legends and the black sheep? We'll also look at 'genograms' a kind of map to our family history that can help us understand our ancestors - and ourselves - even better.

Marianne Powell is a psychotherapist, who trained in working with family systems. Marianne is originally from York, where her dad is the chairman of the Family History Society - so she's got a head start when it comes to researching her own family history! She completed her own genogram in 2020 and uncovered her mother's family's surprising links to the Irish independence movement in the 1910s and beyond. The picture shows her grandfather with Irish folk hero Kevin Barry.
