England in the sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries was a period of significant historical interest as modern society developed with political, cultural and economic transformation. It is a fascinating time to trace our ancestors to, and in which to study their lives. This talk will share how to find and use some of the wide range of sources with which we can research people in this era. Some of these are familiar to those used to researching in later periods, such as parish records and wills. Others are novel to this period, or particularly strong for it, such as Hearth Tax records, churchwardens accounts and manorial records.
Joe is freelance historical researcher, an Associate of AGRA and a PhD student at the University of York where he is researching a social history of the English print trade c.1550-1650. He teaches at the university, the Centre for Lifelong Learning and for Pharos Tutors. Joe is also a Trustee of the British Association for Local History.
