Fergus Smith is an independent historical researcher specializing in Scottish legal records. Before becoming a freelance researcher, Fergus worked as a translator and an antiquarian book dealer. The founder and owner of oldscottish.com, which provides indexes to millions of Scottish historical records, over the last 40 years he has researched in archives in over a dozen countries across 5 continents. He has given talks at RootsTech and to numerous family history societies in Scotland and overseas and has presented research papers at numerous academic conferences organized by universities across the UK, including St Andrews, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
His current research interests include 19th century criminal records, Scottish convicts transported to Australia, and accidents in the workplace. He regularly posts on twitter as @oldscotbooks.
