The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies

In this comprehensive tutorial, Chris Broom will take attendees on a comprehensive ‘round trip’ which first traces the history of the railways, before offering a structured approach to pinpointing ancestors of interest in a plethora of often fragmented records. The two hour session also features a number of case studies highlighting the use of subscription sites, national/local archives and dedicated publications to build a picture of individual railway workers and the communities in which they lived.

Our online tutorials provide guidance on a broad range of topics. They are open to everyone.

The tutorial costs £10 per booking, and can be booked using the following link: https://www.ihgs.ac.uk/tutorial-tracking-down-your-railway-ancestors-with-chris-broom-6th-november-10am-2024
