Rather than marry well and settle down to home and family life, some of Brisbane’s earliest women teachers chose a different life. Highly educated, many of them were also accomplished musicians, singers and dancers. Teaching and running their schools and academies gave them independence and respect. Some were widows and others spinsters. From clues among memoirs, programs, and newspapers, using family history research, we will discover the stories of three remarkable women who, through unexpected circumstances, chose a different path.
