This talk tells the story of school life in Kent during WW2 and features the recently discovered exquisite artwork of a WW2 secondary school art teacher who documented in paint and pencil the lives of school children and their teachers as the war unfolded, producing images of the disrupted schooling, air-raids, doodlebugs, and underground lessons in shelters as experienced by many children. The talk includes fascinating photos of those underground ‘classrooms’. It is unlikely there is a similar collection of paintings anywhere.
Mary spent her career in education, most recently as head teacher of a large secondary school. She has worked also as a freelance journalist, lecturer, and trainer. Her involvement in the subject of this talk came about because, while she was head teacher, two remarkable discoveries were made which produced a vivid, fascinating and unusual insight into school life in WW2.
